Birmingham roared into a two goal lead against Dave Bassett's Barnsley with first Peter Ndlovu and then Martin Grainger from the penalty spot giving Blues a two goal lead at half-time. David Holdsworth made it 3-0 after 51 minutes and although Matt Appleby did pull a goal back for Barnsley, Birmingham were always in control and made it 4-1 when Bryan Hughes slotted home in the final minute.

Nottingham Forest had to survive a spirited Crystal Palace fightback before taking all three points at Selhurst Park. Forest had gone 3-0 up with goals from Andy Johnson, recalled player-manager David Platt and an own-goal from Haydn Mullins. However, goals from Tommy Black and Fan Zhiyi gave Palace hope, and then in what was a sensational finish to the game Forest gave away a penalty and had Dave Beasant sent off before substitute goalkeeper Barry Roach came on a saved the resulting spot kick.

In Monday night's game at Hillsborough Sheffield Wednesday drew 1-1 with big spending Blackburn. Sheffield Wednesday made the best possible start and took the lead after only two minutes. Matthew Hamshaw swung in a beautiful corner that was flicked on by Andy Booth straight into the path of Ashley Westwood who hit a powerful header into the roof of the Blackburn net. Watford put in the performance of the day when they hammered Sheffield United 4-1 at Vicarage Road. Heidar Helguson began the rout after eight minutes, and although Wayne Quinn equalised for Neil Warnock's side Tommy Mooney restored Watford's lead on the stroke of Half-time.
