ID cards are a red herring. Illegal immigrants get illegal work with illegal employers. Total waste of public money!!

If identity cards mean I know longer have to send copies of my passport and or drivers licence, plus a utilities bill( less than 3 months old) every time I wish to open a bank, investment account, buy a house, write a will, open an ISA, building society account, have any dealings with a solicitor,ie.power of attorney, start a trust, make an investment in a listed company then I will consider them an absolute boon. There are quite a few other examples where they will come in handy but I just lost interest. They will undoubtedly be of benefit to prospective employers who would have knowingly to break the law to employ someone who doesn’t have identity, thus limiting abuse. If they wish to act criminally then that’s a whole different issue.

Sounds like you’ll enjoy being awarded social credits like they do in China to monitor ‘trustworthiness’. I hope all those looking forward to it still enjoy the thrill when a government they didn’t vote for starts to ramp up its usage. It’s a dictator’s dream and the only ones affected will be the ordinary plebs, not the criminals. Someone without ID now will still not have it when cards are compulsory. What exactly will the police do to an illegal when they catch him? Same as now, take his details, send him on his way, telling him to report to his nearest police station. He doesn’t, so what happens then?

Just deport all illegals. It's nigh on impossible to book a suite at Claridge's at the moment.

Why is Jamie Redknapp afraid to touch his shoes? This is what we should be asking. I’d be careful eating at Claridges P S.

As I was issued with an identity card in 1942 and I think, although not sure, that it was valid until probably the late ‘40s. I’m not quite as paranoid as your good self. Infact I’ve still got it, maybe in can be re-activated. It will tighten up on so many loop holes and will make many daily transactions much easier. I suspect if someone is operating outside of the law they could be agrieved at its introduction but if one has nothing to hide it should present a problem. As it is DVLA has all your details, information that it is happy to share with, the police, insurance companies, debt collectors etc. NHS and other bodies have your NHS and NI numbers all of which are traceable. Of the countries in Europe I think only Denmark and Ireland don’t have cards. Germany, France, Italy plus many form India to Mexico do. Only the Anglo Saxon group, US, Canada, Australia, U.K. don’t.

It’s about control. ID cards were issued by the government during the war as a security measure because we were fighting a foreign enemy. The government today is the enemy. They will use your information to control and spy on you. It’s nothing to do with criminals or criminal activity.

Obviously we will have to agree to disagree, but I would just stress my main point that Government, should it want to , can glean all the information that it wants on you now/today, using all of the data recorded on you through the mountains of information held on all of the public, except immigrants who have no such records. Can’t really see how an identity card will allow greater control of people who’ve been in the system for years. Guess we’ll all have to wait and see if we get that 5am knock on the door:))

The government can’t glean information because there are protections, government departments don’t share information. HMRC don’t talk to DWP etc. With all this information in one place it can be seen by any department without your permission. It can also be stolen all at once.

That is just not true Paddy. Furthermore this information is all available somewhere if the police or Government body required the information they could get it , legal or illegally, as you have implied. An identity card does not leave you anymore vulnerable than you are at present. Identity cards bring more benefits than not.

Can confirm that HMRC and DWP share information via Real Time Information RTI. DWP share info with HMRC to ensure pensions are taxed correctly. This is permitted by law.
