Weekend D1 scores and stats

last updated Sunday 01st April 2001, 4:00 PM

Fulham Football Club are the top club in the Nationwide league.

4-1 away at Tranmere, an excellent result for the Mighty Whites who must have sent tremours through the whole Premiership.

Jean Tigana's squad brought joy to Fulham fans everywhere. Prior to the game it was thought that Tranmere, on their home territory, would provide a difficult challenge on the run in to the Championship. How wrong we were. The score could have been 6 or 7-1 with the Ref missing an obvious penalty, when Bazza was brought down, and Lee Clark and Andrejs Stolchers making school boy mistakes when they were in easy scoring positions.

The whole squad played well with Lee Clark being a worth Man of the Match while the goals from Louise Saha and Bazza Hayles showed that the suspension of Luis Boa Morte may not be too much of a problem. It is possible to go through the whole team and comment on good performances however the performances of Andrejs Stolcers, John Collins and Sean Davis were particularly good.

It is hard to believe after the wilderness years that we now have a squad that many think could challenge Man Utd for the Premiership.

THANK YOU THANK YOU OH THANK YOU CHAIRMAN MO AND JEAN TIGANA.

Blackburn's boss Graeme Souness was also in the crowd watching the game but at the end he must have gone home with a very bad headache as he watched the Mighty White machine roll over Tranmere and saw the quality gap between his own side and that of Fulham.

COME ON YOU WHITES

The Fulhamweb prediction for this match was 2-1 to the Cottagers with a crowd of 10250 in fact it finished up 4-1 to the Whites in front of 12362. The crowd, the highest of their season, was inflated as Tranmere had decided to let all under 16year olds in free.

On Sunday our strongest challenger Blackburn beat Burnley 5-0 and leapfrogged Bolton to go into second place in Division One on goal difference. Bolton had fluffed their chance to retain the second spot by drawing at home to Wimbledon on the Saturday. Birmingham continued their fall from grace with another home defeat this time 1-0 to Wolves on Sunday.

Only Blackburn can now challenge the Super Whites for the Championship so our visit to Ewood Park on Wednesday 11th April is of major importance.

Say ... We are top of Division One after two thirds of the campaign, have lost only four games, have the best goal difference and the leading scorer in the Premier and Nationwide leagues.
