Manager - Graham Taylor
- Returned to Watford, first as General
Manager, in February 1996. In May 1997 he also took over as manager
- for the second time of course.
- In his first spell as manager, from
1977 to 1987, he led the side from Fourth Division obscurity to Division
One runners-up in six seasons from 1977 to 1983. In 1984 he also led
them out in the FA Cup final, only to lose to Everton.
- In 1987 he took over at Aston Villa,
and then in 1990 he became England boss. After an unhappy three-year
spell as the national manager, he moved onto Wolves, where he spent
a year-and-a-half.
- Since his return to Vicarage Road it
has been like old times, with two promotions in successive seasons.
In his first season as boss (1997-8) he led them to the Second Division
title, and then in the next season (1998-99 to promotion to the Premiership.
- Last season was the first time he had
been relegated as a manager.

Jean Tigana was appointed Fulham manager on July 1 (Fulham announced his
arrival on April 9) last year, taking over from Karl-Heinz Riedle who had
been in temporary charge for the final 6 weeks of last season. Riedle took
over from Paul Bracewell, who was sacked on March 29 - just 10 months after
his appointment (Fulham's play-off hopes had all but ended by this time).
Tigana was wanted by the French FA to succeed
Aime Jacquet as national coach after France 98. By the time Tigana left
Monaco Roger Lemerre had already been appointed. Tigana spent the next year
treading grapes on his French vineyard and working as a players agent (maybe
at the sametime!).
Mohamed Al Fayed had originally wanted Eric
Cantona as manager, but after failing to secure his services, he turned
to Tigana after being recommended by Cantona. Tigana has coached players
such as Petit, Henry, Barthez and Thuram.
Tigana has installed a strict training regime
at the club, during the summer, players were working out as early as 6am
in their training camp in France. All the players have undergone blood tests
and dental checks in rigorous medicals. Some days the players train three
times a day.
Tigana claims to have watched all 57 of Fulham's
games last season on videotape.
As a player Tigana won the European Championship
with France in 1984. He won 52 French caps and played in two World Cup semi-finals.

Background
Now in their second successive season in Div 1, having won the Div 2 title
in 1999. They have not played top division football for 33 years, since
they were relegated in 1967-68.
Last season Fulham finished 9th, 9 points
off a play-off place and 24 points behind Champions Charlton. Last season
was their first season in this division in 13 years, since they were relegated
from the old Div 2 in season 1985-86.
Scored 49 goals last season, the seventh
lowest scorers in Div 1.
Went on a mad goal drought between Dec-Jan
of last season, they scored only once in an 8 game spell in the League,
and that was an own goal!
Conceded only 41 goals last season, only
Man City had a better defence last season.
Were in the top 10 for all of last season,
but did not figure in the play-off positions in the 2nd half of the season.
This season Fulham are obviously looking
for promotion, if they achieve this they would have won promotion from the
bottom division to the top division in the space of five seasons, after
finishing Div 3 runners-up in 1996-97 and then Div 2 Champions two season's
ago.
Al Fayed bought a controlling interest in
Fulham FC in May 1997, with an initial investment of £30m. Shortly after
his takeover, he went on record as saying that he was looking for Fulham
to be a Premiership club in 5 years time.
Al Fayed has spent £20.5M on 42 new players,
since his arrival.
44 players have left the club since Al Fayed's
arrival. This has recouped just under £4.5M.
There have been 6 different managers under
Al Fayed at Fulham - Micky Adams, Ray Wilkins, Kevin Keegan, Paul Bracewell,
Karl-Heinz Riedle and Jean Tigana.
Their best League finish came in season 1959-60
when they finished 10th in the old Div 1.
