Unlucky Ref Dowd to boss West Ham game

last updated Saturday 17th January 2009, 1:15 PM
Philip Dowd (Stoke-on-Trent)

Philip Dowd (Stoke-on-Trent)Philip Dowd began his refereeing career in the Staffordshire Senior League and Midland Football Alliance before making the step up to the Football League roster back in 1992.

He cut his teeth as a referee's assistant for five years before making the step up in 1997. From there Dowd was introduced to the Barclaycard Premiership roster in 2001.

Ref Dowd started his career in the Premiership with the notorious grand melee at Craven Cottage during the visit of Everton in December 2001. Various unsavoury events took place during the melee but the only Fulham player disciplined, a straight red, was Luis Boa Morte who had had no part in the general scuffle. After the game the F.A. decided that the red card was wrong and withdrew it.

Of the 13 Fulham Premiership games, refed by Mr Dowd, The Cottagers have won 4, drawn 3 and lost 6. To be fair to  Mr Dowd 8 of his games were away fixtures and we are not known for success on the road. Of the 8 away games we lost 6 with the last points being taken in May 2005 against Blackburn.

Of the 48 yellow cards waved in his 13 Fulham Premiership games 25 went to Cottagers and of the 5 reds he has given out 3 went to Cottagers.

With Ref Dowds track record Fulham will have to work hard to get anything positive out of this game.

Referee Stats - 2008/2009
Ref Dowd is blowing his whistle more than the average but is at least holding back on dishing out yellow cards.

He has been one of the quickest to get his red card out and award pens in recent seasons but appears to be holding back at the moment.

ReRef Dowd has replaced his red card and penalty hyper-activity with one of the worst homer records in the premiership.

Lawrie Sanchez's introduction to the irratic refereeing style of Mr Dowd
03-02-2007 Premiership Fulham 2-1 Newcastle 4y 0r
Bookings: Bocanegra (Fulham) Bramble, Butt, Milner (Newcastle)
As usual ref Dowd had problems knowing what was going on. Onyewu of Newcastle was particularly fortunate not to be sent off but hay ho it was only Fulham so why try to make the correct decision that could have an impact on the result and Fulham's future in the Premiership.
26-02-2006 Premiership Bolton 2-1 Fulham 2y 0r
Bookings: Nolan (Bolton) Boa Morte (Fulham)
Ref Dowd had a quiet game although Heidar Helguson was busy scoring for both sides.
07-05-2005 Premiership Blackburn 1-3 Fulham 4y 2r
Bookings: Neill, Stead, Short (sent off 69) (Blackburn) Boa Morte, Pembridge, Rosenior (sent off 70), (Fulham)
Two minutes of pure chaos following a bad tackle by Boa Morte that included two sendings off and much huffing and puffing precipitated two dismissals. Blackburn's Short reacted angrily to the tackle and shoved Boa Morte to the ground to earn himself an early exit and a minute later Savage sought retribution with a strong challenge on Boa Morte leading to the dismissal of Rosenior who came steaming in and pushed the Welshman to the ground.
22-01-2005 Premiership Birmingham 1-2 Fulham 4y 0r
Bookings: Johnson (Birmingham) Boa Morte, Bocanegra, Diop (Fulham)
The one where Fulham scored all the goals and Ref Dowd found it difficult, once again, to cope with Boa Morte.

13-12-2004 Premiership Fulham 1-1 Man Utd 13-12-2004 3y 0r
Bookings: Diop, Radzinski (Fulham) Silvestre (Man Utd)
Mr. Dowd, poor again, failed to yellow card Ronaldo for a clear dive in the penalty box in the first half in an attempt to win a spot-kick.

23-10-2004 Premiership Aston Villa 2-0 Fulham 1y 0r
Bookings: Volz (Fulham)
Another poor performance from Mr. Dowd who refused Fulham a clear penalty when the game was at 1-0 and also refused to book Hendrie, who scored the second goal, a number of times prior to him scoring.

20-09-2003 Premiership Fulham 2-2 Man City 7y 0r
Bookings: Clark, Inamoto (Fulham) Anelka, Barton, Sommeil, Sun Jihai, Wright-Phillips (Man City)
Poor performance from Mr. Dowd. Not biased, just very poor.

26-02-2003 FA Cup Burnley 3-0 Fulham 2y 1r
Bookings: Ian Moore (Burnley) Legwinski, Sean Davis (sent off 49) (Fulham)
It seemed that after Dowd's hugely mistaken red for Luis in the Everton melee that he was hanging the Fulham man out to dry as he ignored Boa Morte being flattened time after time. Dowd decided to help Fulham a bit more by giving Sean Davis a straight red for what he regarded as a reckless tackle.

30-11-2002 Premiership Blackburn 2-1 Fulham 3y 0r
Bookings: Dunn (Blackburn) Finnan, Sean Davis (Fulham)

08-12-2001 Premiership Fulham 2-0 Everton 7y 2r
Bookings: Hayles, Legwinski, Melville, Boa Morte (sent off 78) (Fulham) Pistone, Simonsen, Stubbs, Weir(sent off 77 2nd yel) (Everton)
This was the game of the great Melee. Boa Morte caught Weir as he cleared the ball on the edge of his penalty area - and the Everton captain showed a total lack of responsibility as he dragged his foot into Boa Morte's face as he got to his feet. The Fulham players were already unhappy after being kicked around the pitch by Moye's Muggers, suffering racist chants and seeing a bottle thrown at Malbranque. When they saw what Weir had done it seemed that there had been an implosion which dragged 21 players into a crowd pushing and shoving each other while one or two unnamed Cottagers took the opportunity to put the boot into the floored Weir. When the dust had settled Ref Dowd decided to send off Boa Morte, the only player who had not taken part in the melee as he had been sitting quietly where he had originally fallen, and taking no action against the Fulham players who had apparently stamped on Weir. The red card was later rescinded on appeal. Ref Phil Dow had been officiating at his first Premiership match.

31-01-2001 Division 1 QPR 0-2 Fulham 1y 0r
