Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney has been called up to the Scotland squad for the first time.

And his international manager Gordon Strachan is expecting great things from the 26-year-old.

Cairney is among three uncapped players in Strachan’s 30-man squad for two home games, a friendly against Canada and World Cup qualifier against Slovenia.

The Fulham star has been in fine form for the Cottagers this season, winning the London Football Awards prize for EFL player of the year earlier this month, and Strachan was particularly impressed by his display in Saturday’s 3-1 win at Newcastle.

“Tom Cairney was the best man on the pitch at St James’ Park,” Gordon Strachan said after announcing his squad. “But that was no surprise, he has been the best man on the pitch on many occasions.”

Cairney will be joined by team-mate Chris Martin in the squad, one of six Fulham players called up for international duty so far.

Fulham players called up for international duty:

Floyd Ayité (Togo) - Friendly

Tom Cairney (Scotland) – Friendly & World Cup Qualifier

Stefan Johansen (Norway) – World Cup Qualifier

Tomas Kalas (Czech Republic) – Friendly & World Cup Qualifier

Neeskens Kebano (Congo) - Friendly

Chris Martin (Scotland) – Friendly & World Cup Qualifier
