Fulham forward Steve Marlet has insisted that he can still force his way into France's World Cup squad.

"I haven't given up on the idea of being among the 23 players who head off but it's beyond my control," he said.

Marlet has suffered a terrible run of injuries since joining Fulham for a record £11.5 million in September which culminated in him breaking a tibia on October 27 against Southampton (before the injury, he had set up two goals for countryman Steed Malbranque in a 2-0 win).

He has since returned to the Fulham side and is nearing full fitness. And Marlet, who was criticised in France for leaving Champions' League hopefuls Lyon for a lucrative switch to west London, is confident that coach Roger Lemerre had not forgotten about him.

"The coach hasn't called me but I guess he follows the English championship seeing how many France internationals play here.

"I'm not letting all that bother me. It's not my style to ask for anything, I'll give my best with Fulham and the rest is beyond my control," he told Friday's edition of France Football.

"I'm close to getting back to my best," he added.

Marlet scored his fifth goal for Fulham in the midweek defeat at Middlesbrough. He has been called up to the France squad six times, but missed the trip to Chile last year through injury.

He is up against tough compeititon in Nicolas Anelka, Djibril Cisse, and Sidney Govou for the fourth spot among France's strikers behind Thierry Henry, David Trezeguet and Sylvain Wiltord.
