Fulham winger Luis Boa Morte could finally be set to join Newcastle United because of a goalkeeping crisis at Craven Cottage.

Magpies boss Graeme Souness has been chasing the pacy Portuguese’s signature since January but has always been unwilling to match the Londoners’ £6million asking price.

However, Souey has finally managed to put together a tempting package for Boa Morte, which will see £3million plus goalkeeper Steve Harper heading for Craven Cottage.

The deal may not be worth the £6million Fulham chief Chris Coleman was holding out for, but he is desperate to sign an experienced shot-stopper after Mark Crossley and Jaroslav Drobny picked up injuries during pre-season.

The deal to sell veteran keeper Edwin van der Sar to Manchester United for £2.5million looked good value at the time, but it now looks set to cost Fulham Boa Morte as well and is beginning to look very expensive.
