Referee Martin Atkinson, the Bradford, Yorkshire-born referee, started his refereeing career at the relatively early age of 16 years, as the local team did not have a referee to oversee matches. By 2003-2004, he joined the national list of referees.

Only two years after his Conference debut Atkinson was appointed to referee his first Premier League game April 2005, he joined the FIFA list of referees in 2006.

In September 2010, Atkinson was handed a one-week demotion to the role of fourth official after a time-keeping dispute with Everton manager David Moyes. Everton had scored two injury-time goals to make the score 3–3 against Manchester United, but Atkinson then blew his final whistle while Everton were midway through an attack with a chance of a winner.

Ref Atkinson last refed Fulham in the 2-0 away defeat at Man City in this season's League Cup. He booked one player, Vincent Kompany of Man city. Prior to that game Mr Atkinson refed Fulham in the home 1-1 draw with Watford in September. He booked two Fulham defenders, Fosu-Mensah and Mawson and one Watford player.

His was of course the Ref for the Championship PlayOff 2nd Leg 2016/2017 when Reading won 1-0. In that game Mr Atkinson booked two Reading players and McDonald (38,f), Johansen (58,f) and Malone (65,d) of Fulham.

The last time Ref Atkinson refed Newcastle was in their opening game of the season when they were beaten 1-2 at home by Tottenham. He booked two players from each team.

Last season Ref Atkinson officiated at 33 matches issuing 118 yellow cards and 5 reds, some 3.6 yellows per game, just above the average.

His busiest game recently was in December of last year when Man Utd and Burnley drew 2-2 at Old Trafford and 10 players were yellow carded. He followed up with a nine card festival in April when Man City lost 2-3 at home to Man Utd.
