Referee Martin Atkinson, the Bradford, Yorkshire-born referee, started his refereeing career at the relatively early age of 16 years, as the local team did not have a referee to oversee matches. By 2003-2004, he joined the national list of referees.
Only two years after his Conference debut Atkinson was appointed to referee his first Premier League game in April 2005 and he then joined the FIFA list of referees in 2006.
Ref Atkinson last refed Fulham in the 0-0 away draw at Newcastle in December 2018 when he yellow carded three players, two from Fulham, Kamara (84,f), Seri (87,f).
Prior to the Newcastle game Mr Atkinson refed the League Cup 2-0 defeat up at Man City when he booked one player, Vincent Kompany for a foul
He also refed the home 1-1 draw with Watford in September. He booked two Fulham defenders, Fosu-Mensah and Mawson and one Watford player, all for fouls.
The last time Ref Atkinson refed Burnley was about a month ago in early December when they beat Brighton 1-0 at Turf Moor, he booked two players, both from Burnley.
Last season Ref Atkinson officiated at 33 matches issuing 118 yellow cards and 5 reds, some 3.6 yellows per game, just above the average. So far this season in 18 games he has waved his yellow card 56 times and his red twice so, at 3.0 yellows a game, less than last season
His busiest game recently was in December of last year when Man Utd and Burnley drew 2-2 at Old Trafford and 10 players were yellow carded, 7 were for Burnley players!!. He followed up with a nine card festival in April when Man City lost 2-3 at home to Man Utd.
