Ref Webb to boss Wigan game

last updated Tuesday 28th October 2008, 9:06 AM
Howard Webb - Rotherham, South Yorkshire
Howard Webb begun his career in the Rotherham district and North East Counties Leagues and gained promotion to the National List in 1996. He was a new addition to the Premiership List for the 2003/04 season after consistent performances in the Nationwide leagues. Recently appointed as an FIFA official, Ref Webb, has also taken his next steps up the refereeing ladder with his Champions League debut just before taking control of The Charity Shield match between Chelsea and Arsenal, he hopes more international recognition will come soon.

Ref Webb said "I've never experienced any violence as a referee but then being 6'3" and 15 1/2 stone probably helps! "Mr Webb's first game in the Premiership was Fulham's home game against Wolves back in October 2004 and after the game he was rated unfit by 60% of voters. Since that game an improving Mr Webb has reffed Fulham in 12 Premiership games and we have won 3, drawn 2 and lost 7. As the man from Rotherham was the ref for our wins over Arsenal and Tottenham and our draw at Stamford Bridge he had some saving graces but having contributed to three Fulham defeats on the trot he needs to boost his feelgood factor..In the 12 games there have been 39 yellows, 19 for Fulham players, and three reds, one for a Fulham player and two for opposition players. All in all Ref Webb has not done us any favours when you consider that in all his matches last season he gave 45% of yellows to home teams .
Referee Stats - 2007/2008

Ref Webb whistled  a little more than the average ref last season and dished out more yellows than the average ref. However he only issued one red card all season so that's some compensation.Mr Webb awarded 6 penalties last season following 10 decisions for the previous 2006/2007 season. That has made him 5th and now 8th busiest penalty giver. 67% of his pens go to the home side

Ref Webb is relatively even-handed with his whistling and is marginally less of a homer than many of his mates. Unfortunately ;-)
