Josh Smith started refereeing on the Peterborough and District Junior Alliance League aged 14 in 2006 following in the footsteps of both his dad and grandfather who had refereed football and rugby league respectively.

In 2015, Smith was promoted to the EFL Assistant Referee list completing three years on the list before opting to specialise as a referee. He then received successive promotions from the National League onto the EFL referees list and then to the Select Group 2 List of Referees ahead of the 2020/21 season.

Mr Smith last refed a Fulham game in August 2023 when we beat Tottenham 5-3 on pens in the League Cup, after drawing 1-1 in fulltime. Andreas Pereira, Raúl Jimenez, Harry Wilson, Joao Palhinha and Kenny Tete were Fulham's penalty scorers. Mr Smith booked two players, both from the Tottenham squad.

Prior to the Tottenham game Mr Smith refed Fulham when we drew 2-2 at home to Crystal Palace. Three players were booked, all from the Fulham squad, Tosin Adarabioyo, Antonee Robinson and Joao Palhinha

In January 2023 Mr Smith refed our 2-0 away win at Hull in the FA Cup. He booked one player from each squad, the Fulham player was Issa Diop. The Fulham goal scorers were Layvin Kurzawa and Daniel James.

Josh Smith had only refed three Fulham games before the Hull game the last of which was the 4-0 away defeat at Sheffield United in May 2022, the last game of our Championship winning season.

Earlier in the season Ref Smith refed Fulham's 4-1 home win against Barnsley in the Championship. Mr Smith kept his cards in his pocket and Fulham's goal scorers were Aleksandar Mitrovic, Fabio Carvalho, Neeskens Kebano and Harry Wilson.

His first Fulham game was when we beat Swansea City 3-1 at The Cottage at the end of September 2021. He yellow carded one player, Ben Cabango of Swansea City. Aleksandar Mitrovic scored all three goals, all in the first half.

Mr Smith last refed Nottingham Forest in their Championship 1-1 draw away to Sheffield United in March 2022.

Last season he refed 35 games and dished out 140 yellows and 4 reds, so an average of 4.0 yellows per game. So far this season he has refed 18 games and dished out 68 yellows and 3 reds, an average of 3.8 yellows per game.

His busiest outing in recent times was in the Brentford vrs Burnley game, in October 2023, when he booked five Brentford players and three Burnley players, topping it off with a second yellow/red for a Burnley player.
