Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp has admitted he failed in a last-ditch bid for Fulham-bound Antti Niemi.

Niemi is set to seal his move from Southampton to Fulham on Monday after agreeing a deal with the West London club over the weekend.

The Finnish international rejected the overtures from a host of clubs to make the move to Craven Cottage.

Redknapp is in the market for a new goalkeeper with Jamie Ashdown currently sidelined through injury and he revealed he made a late move to try and snatch Niemi from Fulham, but without success.

"I like Antti Niemi and he is a terrific goalkeeper, one of the best in the country," said Redknapp.

"We tried to see if we could do a deal but I think he is going to Fulham."
