Fulham midfielder Oscar Bobb’s beautiful solo goal against Coventry City earned Fulham a second 1-0 win in as many weeks.
On a tough afternoon for both sets of players in horrific weather, it was the Whites who went closest in the first half, with Josh King desperately unfortunate to see his effort thwack the upright.
Our hosts were more of a threat after the break, but it was the Whites who struck the decisive blow, courtesy of Bobb’s dancing feet and emphatic finish.
Álvaro Arbeloa was forced into one change to the XI that started the victory over Hull City a week earlier. Sander Berge had got over the worst of a recent illness, but only sufficiently for a place on the bench, meaning a first Premier League start for Hugo Larsson in the middle of the park.
Chances were at a premium early on as both sides adjusted to the torrential conditions, but Shea Charles did draw a first save of the game from Carl Rushworth 14 minutes in with a left-footed strike following some intricate work around the box.
The rainwater on the frame of Rushworth’s goal then went flying as Josh King smashed a rocket against the post. The loose ball dropped to Alex Iwobi but his effort flew off target.
Coventry responded with a couple of wayward headers on goal up the other end. Bobby Thomas sent one miles wide, but Brandon Thomas-Asante directed his just a yard over the bar.
Fulham had shaded the first half and perhaps should have been given the opportunity to go in front in stoppage time when Calvin Bassey clearly had his shirt pulled in the penalty area, but VAR saw no infringement.
The Sky Blues spent a lot more time in our half after the restart, but it was the Whites who continued to be the more creative. King had a couple of shots – one snatched wide and one straight at Rushworth, who later had to palm a dangerous deflected cross over his own crossbar.
That corner proved pivotal. After Bobb’s delivery wasn’t properly cleared, the ball was worked back to him and he showed wonderful footwork to fool his man and work a yard, before bending a sumptuous finish inside the far post.
That goal came with just 10 minutes remaining, a period that the boys saw through without too much duress to make it two wins from two, and move up to 12th in the Premier League table.
