LUIS BOA MORTE has revealed that Newcastle United wanted to sign him, and expressed a desire to play for Benfica in the future.

The Portuguese international was earmarked for a summer return to his homeland but instead signed for Fulham on a four-year contract, following his successful loan spell at Craven Cottage.

It was inevitable that his unhappy time at Southampton was to come to an end, but it was the prospect of remaining in London which persuaded the former Arsenal striker to commit his future to Jean Tigana's side.

"In truth, I am perfectly accustomed to life in London," he said. "And this influenced my decision."One of the biggest clubs in England, Newcastle, revealed an interest but I preferred to be with Fulham, for being in London."I feel very well in Fulham, always very well as I was treated like this since this first day."The squad is good and the team has technique. We have to fight the best without fear of facing them."Everything is possible. We only need to believe in ourselves."

The 23-year-old has admitted that there was the possibility of heading back to Portugal, with Benfica particularly close to signing him. Indeed, sources from Lisbon insisted a deal had been struck to take Boa Morte to Estadio da Luz.

"This is a situation that must be clarified," he said. "I travelled with Antonio Simoes in the same plane, from Lisbon to London, but we did not speak about anything. "By the way, I never spoke to any officials at Benfica, not even with Filipe Luis Vieira. "Jesualdo Ferreira did ask me if I wanted to play for Benfica. I said 'yes', I would like to represent Benfica. "Perhaps we lacked the time to negotiate. I believe time became scarce."

And Boa Morte confesses to being a little upset that the proposed move to the Portuguese giants did not materialise.

"In part, I was a little sad," he admitted. "Because, in my soul, I counted upon returning to Portuguese football."I believe that it could happen in the future, if I continue to progress."
