Fulham manager Martin Jol could look elsewhere to bolster his Fulham backroom staff after missing out on former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen.

The Craven Cottage chief had hoped to recruit the 49-year-old, who has been out of work since his short stint at Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala.

However, the Dutchman is understood to have rejected the chance to hook up with his fellow countryman in SW6 and is in advanced negotiations to become the technical director at the Qatar Football Association.

"I spoke about Rene before but he went to Russia with Anzhi and was sacked. He was available but then he went to Dubai," said Jol.

"I was looking because you try to have a good mix of qualities to add to what we've got.

"If there's an opportunity to bring someone in we will think about it."
