Fulham target in stalled talks

SOUTHAMPTON officials remain resigned to losing Chris Baird to Sunderland, despite the player having returned to the South Coast with his future unresolved.

The Northern Ireland defender’s representatives are preparing to resume transfer talks with the Black Cats after initial discussions at the weekend, prompted by the Saints’ acceptance of a £3m bid from the Wearsiders, ended without agreement and the 25-year-old spent yesterday training with his Championship club. A transfer is still expected to be completed, with the latest development considered a delay rather than a hitch. Baird is understood to have indicated his willingness to become a Sunderland player and has instructed his agent to complete the deal on his behalf.

“Chris trained with us on Monday but he’s still in talks with Sunderland,” confirmed Southampton manager George Burley, who, although reluctant to lose Baird, is in no position to oppose the transfer after the Black Cats met his club’s full asking price.

“Nothing’s finalised and nothing agreed. We’ve agreed a fee with Sunderland and Chris and his agent are in talks with Sunderland. That’s where it is at the moment.”
