Juventus and Fulham F.C. are delighted to
announce that they have reached an agreement for the transfer of Edwin van
der Sar to Fulham Football Club.
The Dutch national team goalkeeper has signed a four year agreement with
the team, whose Chairman is Mohamed al Fayed.
Van der Sar, who has 44 caps for Holland previously played for Ajax before
joining Juventus in 1999.
A medical examination will take place tomorrow morning.
Fulham Football Clubs Manager, Jean Tigana, comments:
We are delighted to welcome Edwin to Fulham. His playing ability has
been proven at the very highest level both domestically and internationally
and we believe that he will be a great asset to the squad.
Edwin Van der Sar commented:
I am happy and relieved to have signed for Fulham. The plans that
Fulham Football Club presented to me were impressive and I especially like
the ambition that the club has.
I spoke with the manager and we had a good conversation about the way he
wants to play. Jean Tigana wants to go to the top with Fulham and he proved
he can do that with Monaco, I like that ambition. At Ajax, Juventus and
for Amsterdam I have played with top teams, and now I want to use my experience
to reach the same goal with Fulham.

Foreign goalkeepers
do not have a happy record in Italy and many questioned the wisdom
of bringing in the giant Dutchman at Juventus at the expense of
the well-established Angelo Peruzzi. A string of clean sheets and
outstanding saves had them eating their words. A world-class performer,
Van der Sar is incredibly agile for a big man and combines calm
assurance with the ability to make outstanding saves.
The tall Van der Sar started his career with amateur club Noorwijk
and joined Ajax in 1989. It took him four years to break into the
first team, but once there his position was never in doubt. He won
the Champions' League title in 1995, keeping a clean sheet in the
final as Ajax beat Milan 1-0. Van der Sar left the Netherlands for
Italy and Juventus in 1999. He was in the Netherlands squad for
the 1994 World Cup and won his first cap in 1995. By Euro 96 he
was the No 1 and has remained so since.
He became the target of the Juve boo-boys after being sent off in
a 3-1 away defeat to Panathinaikos in November 2000 a result that
effectively cost the club their place in the Champions' League,
and the arrival of Gianluigi Buffon in July 2001 indicated that
his future lay elsewhere.
