Fulham have opened talks with defender Aaron Hughes about a new contract at Craven Cottage.

The Northern Irishman made 29 appearances for the Whites last season but is in the final 12 months of his current deal in SW6.

Boss Martin Jol is keen to keep hold of the 32-year-old and the Chronicle understands the two parties have begun negotiations about extending his stay at the club.

Hughes has played more than 200 games for Fulham since his switch from Newcastle in 2007, forming a formidable partnership in the centre of defence with Brede Hangeland.

Last season Hughes performed a U-turn on his decision to retire from international football.
