Fulham’s Joao Palhinha was subject to strong interest in the summer transfer window.

In fact, as The Top Flight covered, he was very close to a move to German giants Bayern, having flown to Munich in order to complete a medical.

Things fell apart as Fulham failed to find a replacement, with Manchester United’s Scott McTominay someone the Cottagers looked at signing but did not.

Manchester United themselves were reportedly admirers of Palhinha near the end of the window but did not pursue a move.

What will be a massive blow to Bayern Munich, who wanted to sign the player in January, is Joao Palhinha has signed a new contract at Fulham.

Palhinha’s contract is extended a further year, till 2028, with an option for an extra year.

The Club is delighted to announce that Joao Palhinha has signed a contract extension with Fulham.

Palhinha has committed his future at Craven Cottage until the summer of 2028, with a Club option to extend by a further 12 months.

Speaking to FFCtv after signing, Palhinha said: “I feel happy. A lot of history happened these few weeks for me, you heard a lot of things about my future, but I’m just focused on my work at Fulham.

“I always have 100 per cent commitment with this Club, I have all the respect for the Club, for the fans. Since the first day, they supported me a lot, and me and my family felt this since the first moment that I arrived here.

“I will give everything that I have. It was always like that, on the field, outside of the field, in our dressing room with my teammates.

“I have a lot of respect for everyone here in Fulham and I am ready to start again, to give all my best, and I want to achieve good things.”

Tony Khan added: “I'm happy to announce the contract extension of Joao Palhinha to 2028, with an option to extend to 2029.

“We all know what a fantastic player he is and that his contribution to the team has been immense. I'm very appreciative of how hard João fights for us on the pitch, and pleased that we've agreed to a new contract.

“Come on Fulham!”

The midfielder arrived at Fulham in July 2022, and needed no time at all settling in, promptly establishing himself as a firm fan favourite.

Winning more tackles than any other player in the Premier League last season – by some margin – Palhinha was also a considerable threat at the other end of the pitch as he chipped in with four goals, two of which finished in the top three of our Goal of the Season vote.

His consistently high levels of performance throughout the campaign also saw him named Player of the Season.

João’s progress was curtailed slightly going into 2023/24 after picking up a shoulder injury in the States, but he marked his first start of the season with a dramatic late equaliser to earn Fulham a point away to Arsenal last month.
