Following on from Fulham’s point at Villa Park last week, Fulham manager Álvaro Arbeloa is keen to see his side back up that performance at the Cottage against Newcastle United.

"We believe in ourselves, we believe in the way we're playing. We like to keep the ball, create chances. I think we need to keep improving, we have very good supporters and at home we need to win games.

"I have a very good squad with very good players. I know we are just starting, but we want to keep improving. We know how difficult it will be to beat Newcastle tomorrow, they are a very good team."

The big news on Friday morning, however, was the inclusion of Josh King in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad to face Croatia and Spain.

The Fulham manager was full of praise for the 19-year-old, recognising the magnitude of the achievement for both the player and the club.

"I think it's a special moment for him, our club and our supporters,” said Arbeloa. “Josh is the pride of our club and our supporters. He's been here since he was 8 years old. I am very happy for him, he's a humble kid. It's a special day for all of us.

"It's important for our academy as well. This is one of the reasons I became a coach, I want to help players reach their levels. Tomorrow, we will celebrate if we win."

The midfielder has been thriving in the manager’s system, starting every Premier League game this season and directly contributing to three goals.

"He gave a small speech before the game the other day, it was amazing. I am so happy to coach him, develop him and reach his level. He needs to stay humble like he is, he needs to continue improving, scoring goals, making numbers.

"You cannot forget he is only 19 years old. He can become one of the best players in the world. I saw him this morning, he is very happy. I said 'it's the first step, next you need to win the World Cup!’”

Finally, the manager confirmed that Tom Cairney will be sidelined for the weekend, sharing that “he has some issues in his knee,” and with the skipper playing an important role in recent weeks, he “doesn't want to take risks with him”.

On Gonzalo Garcia's lack of goals, he insisted he would remain patient with his young players, backing them to improve.

He said: "I believe in young players, and maybe it would be easier for us to sign a player with more experience who can perform straight away. I will be patient with young players. Maybe they need time to perform. I know it's hard for the supporters, but it's really nice when you believe in someone during the difficult moments because they will score goals."

He stressed the importance of picking up a victory against Newcastle before the international break, admitting his side are not in a comfortable position and need to make home advantage count.

He said: "We are far from where I want us to be, but we're taking small steps. I told my players the other day, you win because you believe, and that's what confidence means: you believe in yourself when you're not winning. We know that we have to fight every game. We have very good support at home, we need to win games."
