Fulham manager Marco Silva was pleased to see a stoppage-time goal go Fulham’s way in a 1-1 draw at Brighton In a fixture never lacking in late drama.
Last season, it was the Sussex side who stole all three points with João Pedro’s 98th-minute penalty. This time, however, Rodrigo Muniz was the hero, firing home in the sixth minute of added time to earn a well-deserved draw.
“Another dramatic game away from home against Brighton,” Marco reflected. “It’s not the first time.
“Last season was a late goal from them – this season for us. Three seasons ago was the same – we scored in the last minute of the game too.”
It looked as though Matt O’Riley’s second-half penalty would prove decisive, until Muniz's late equaliser rescued a point. Marco explained that the draw was a fair one on the balance of play.
“It wasn't the most amazing game from either side in terms of performance. The game was very balanced first-half. I think our first 25 minutes were at a good level with some dangerous moments, although no clear-cut chances.
“Second-half started the same way, the only difference that made an impact on the game was the penalty. Until then, the game was more or less the same – very balanced. The penalty changed the dynamic of the game and boosted their confidence.
“They had some offensive transitions and counter-attacks, while we had some good chances. We showed fighting spirit and the belief that we were capable to at least equalise.
“Looking overall at the game, I think the draw was a deserved point for both teams. I think it's a fair result.”
Muniz has now scored past the 90-minute mark on four occasions for Fulham, and was praised by Marco for his performance and the bond he has with supporters.
“His connection with the fans is very strong, not just because he scored today. Rodrigo created something that isn't so easy to do. The fans recognise his quality, and that he gives everything for the shirt.
“With Rodrigo, it doesn't matter against who and it doesn't matter if he scores or not – he's always going to give 100 per cent. It was nice to see him score, and that connection is there. The fans showed their support for the whole team.”
After impressing in pre-season, 18-year-old Josh King was handed an opening day start, a decision Marco explained was made on merit.
“Very good performance, very good performance. He did really well. These types of games and the attention he gets from the players around him is going to help him improve. He's a top player and I didn't have any reservations to start him.
“He started the game because he deserved it. He had a very good pre-season and, for me, it doesn't matter if he's 18 or 34 or 35 – if he deserves to play, he's going to start the game.”
