Midfielder Luis Boa Morte was named as a substitute for Portugal's away game against Russia last night which ended 0-0. Portugal are the undefeated leaders of Group 3 and need one point to qualify with their next game a home fixture against Liechtenstein. Luis did not play last night but must have a good chance of appearing in Germany next summer.

Striker Heidar Helguson seems to have recovered from a knock received in Iceland's game against Croatia. Last night he played for 90 minutes against Bulgaria in Sofia where the Icelanders went down 3-2 after going 2-0 in front in the first 16 minutes. The game ended in some upset with Heidar and his mates receiving 5 yellows, 4 of them in the last 12 minutes. Unfortunately for Heidar Iceland cannot qualify for the final stages in Germany.

Defender Claus Jensen continued his brilliant run of form striking Denmark's opening goal in their home game against Georgia at the Parken stadium in Copenhagen. Claus scored from a ninth minute free-kick when he flighted the ball around the wall and into the top corner of the goal from the edge of the area. The Cottager's midfielder was substituted in the 63 minute with the score at 4-1. Denmark went on to beat Georgia 6-1

Defender Niclas Jensen also played in the Danish victory over Georgia playing the whole 90 minutes. Ukraine have already won Group 2 and the Danes, four points behind current second placed Turkey who have played an extra game, helped their chances of making the play-offs with just two more games to go.

Defender Zat Knight, selected for the England squad, was spared the embarrassment of featuring in the historic 1-0 defeat by Northern Ireland. England must now win their last two games, against Austria and Poland at home in October, to avoid the play-offs.

Striker Brian McBride and defender Carlos Bocanegra were rested for the 0-0 draw between USA and Guatemala with the Americans having already qualified.
