FULHAM are ready to make a £3million January transfer window move to rescue Emile Heskey from his Aston Villa nightmare.

Cottagers boss Roy Hodgson has been monitoring England centre-forward Heskey's problems at Villa Park, where he has started only three games since his £3.5m January switch from Wigan.

Fulham will make room for Heskey by offloading the misfiring Bobby Zamora, with whom Hodgson has finally lost patience after only two league goals last season and just one this term. Championship promotion challengers West Brom have been tracking Zamora for some time and are ready to offer £2m in January.

Heskey, who won his 57th international cap in the defeat by Ukraine on Saturday, is set to play again in England's final World Cup qualifier against Belarus at Wembley tomorrow.

He insisted at the weekend he would have showdown talks with Villa boss Martin O'Neill over his situation, because he knows if he is not getting regular games at club level his place in Fabio Capello's World Cup plans could be in jeopardy.

Heskey hinted that he may have to look for a move away from Villa in January if things do not improve - and it is Fulham who will be first in the queue.

Hodgson has stood by Zamora for more than a year even though he has been woefully short of goals. And with strike partner Andy Johnson struggling with shoulder problems, a partnership that worked so well last year has not been clicking this time around.

Zamora would have gone in the summer had he been able to agree terms with Hull over a £5m switch and Hodgson sees Heskey as a top-quality replacement, even though he is hardly a regular scorer himself .

As well as regular football, Hodgson can also offer Heskey the chance to play in Europe, which other suitors may not.
