Chelsea will urge the Football Association to take action against Fulham's Clint Dempsey after studying video evidence of the collision that left John Terry with a fractured cheekbone on Saturday.
The England and Chelsea captain had surgery yesterday and has told Steve McClaren he still hopes to be fit for the European Championship qualifiers against Estonia on Saturday week and Russia four days later.
Chelsea are incensed with Dempsey for what they believe was a deliberate elbow and they were thought to be considering their options.
Fulham manager Lawrie Sanchez defended his man by insisting the American was 'not the kind of player who would do something like that deliberately'.
Referee Martin Atkinson did not award a free-kick so that leaves Dempsey vulnerable to censure from the FA if they consider a charge of violent conduct appropriate. Chelsea manager Avram Grant said: 'I didn't see the incident but the players said it was an elbow."
