Premiership-bound Fulham were cheered to promotion
by the biggest travelling crowd in the Nationwide League.
The Cottagers, who had the best away record in the three divisions, accounted
for six highest club attendances during the season as they stormed to the
Division One championship.
Their trips to Crystal Palace, Grimsby, Tranmere, Watford, West Brom and
Wimbledon gave the home team their biggest crowd of the 2000/01 campaign.
It is a statistic that shows the potential of the club, whose home at Craven
Cottage holds just 19,250 and whose average attendance was under 15,000.
Crystal Palace's travelling fans came second in the poll, accounting for
three clubs' highest attendances.
Five clubs had their biggest attendances on the last day of the season,
of which two - Huddersfield and Grimsby - were still battling for their
survival.
In Division Two, Stoke, who had the highest average gate in the division,
came out on top giving four teams their biggest crowds, but champions Millwall
gave only one team - Bournemouth - their biggest crowd.
Promoted Chesterfield and Hull, currently in the play-offs, were level
on top in Division Three.
Derby matches are clearly still the games that fans most look forward to,
with 10 of the 24 Division One teams having their biggest crowd of the season
against their main local rivals. It was also 10 in Division Two, while 15
clubs in the Third Division had their highest gate in a derby.
The figures below show which visiting teams attracted the biggest crowds
in the Nationwide League.
