Fulham at Man City in midst of crowd concerns

last updated Friday 04th September 2009, 12:16 PM
Fulham visit Manchester City in the Carling Cup on Wednesday 23rd September with an 20.00 kick-off.

Manchester United and Manchester City are both scheduled to play at home in the Carling Cup, on the same day, no less than three days after their Old Trafford derby encounter in the Premier League, United are set to play Wolves.

Although the situation is not completely unheard of, the matter is obviously complicated by the crunch derby day fixture just days earlier, which will have added spice due to Carlos Tevez's return to the club and City's recent ambitions of reaching the higher echelons of English football.

Discussions between the two clubs and the Greater Manchester Police had hoped to come to a conclusion whereby one of the sides plays on the Tuesday, but both clubs were reluctant because the Manchester Derby is on the Sunday evening.

It was suggested City play their tie against Fulham a day later, but the The Cottagers refused, as they face Arsenal on the Saturday.

The situation was only resolved after the two clubs agreed to push back their kick-off times in order to aid the Greater Manchester Police.

Concerns are high with both clubs clearly eager to avoid a similar scenario to that seen at Upson Park recently, when the Carling Cup tie between West Ham and Millwall was marred by unsavoury crowd trouble.
