Wigan face Fulham in their next game and their England international goalkeeper Chris Kirkland believes it is a vital clash for The Latics.

"We've not had a bad start to the season - seven points from five games is okay," added Kirkland.

"On reflection, I think we were a bit lucky to get something at West Ham, but against Newcastle last time out it was a case of so near yet so far.

"The lads have been playing some good stuff, the new players have settled in well and hopefully there is a lot more to come from us.

"But Fulham is a game we really have to try to win, before we facing Liverpool and Manchester United.

"So it's the Fulham and afterwards the Reading game which are massive for us - to me they are must-win matches."

Kirkland says he has been happy with his form so far this season.

The England international endured a frustrating season last term with thumb and shoulder injuries sidelining him for a number of months.

The former Liverpool and Coventry keeper is now hoping his injury problems are behind him and that he can enjoy an extended run in the side.

"It's hard every time you have to come back from injury, but I'm happy at the moment," Kirkland told the Wigan Evening Post.

"I need a good run in the team. Last season, I played 27 games which wasn't too bad, and hopefully this time I can play all season.
