Fulham ended a miserable run of seven consecutive losses with an impressive victory over Aston Villa on Sunday.

The west London side, led by new coach Rene Meulensteen, overcame Paul Lambert's side courtesy of first-half strikes from Steve Sidwell and Dimitar Berbatov.

The game started in lively fashion, Berbatov bringing a fine save from Brad Guzan with a header and Christian Benteke twice going close at the other end.

Alex Kacaniklic was then saw an effort cleared off the line but the home side were not to be denied for long. Sidwell ran onto Ashkan Dejagah's pass, held off Leandro Bacuna and levered a shot over the sprawling Guzan.

Bacuna was at fault once more for the second goal, bringing down Kacaniklic in the area following a fine Berbatov pass. The Bulgarian stepped up to take the penalty, nonchalantly tucking the ball into the corner of the net.

Fulham continued to boss the game after the break, with John Arne Riise, Philippe Senderos and Berbatov all going close.

Villa felt they should have had a spot-kick of their own when Gabby Agbonlahor went down in the area, while Christian Benteke almost ended his goal draught late on, but the hosts were not to be thwarted.
