Fulham assistant boss Christian Damiano said: "It was a very important win and we deserved it.

"We played well in difficult conditions. We also kept a clean sheet which was pleasing. Our defence was very solid."

Sven Goran Eriksson was in the crowd with midfielder Davis impressing.

Damiano added: "Sean did well for us, like he did against Liverpool.

"But it is very difficult for the England manager, as he has so many good midfielders."

Goalscorer Davis said: "I scored my first goal against Middlesbrough and I've missed a few chances of late, so it was nice to see that one hit the back of the net today.''

Damiano also said he "did not have any more news at the moment" on Fulham's hopes of signing Tottenham striker Sergei Rebrov.

Boro Boss McClaren, whose team have yet to lose at home, said: "It is a case of Jekyll and Hyde. We have to start picking up points away from home.

"We are now the only team unbeaten at home in the Premiership but we have lost eight successive away games in the league. We were without confidence or any self-belief, which is something we could all see.

"We played better in the second half but we still didn't score - but I still can't defend the performance. I was particularly disappointed with our first- half display

"We are still aiming to go higher. There is no sulking or hiding - we just have to work harder."
