Fulham winger Harry Wilson’s rocket rounded off a fantastic evening for Wales, as they secured Nations League promotion with a 4-1 win over Iceland in Cardiff on Tuesday night.
Things got off to a rocky start when Andri Gudjohnsen – son of former Fulham loanee Eidur – netted, but Wales responded through Liam Cullen’s brace before half-time, the first of which came about following a terrific Wilson interception.
Brennan Johnson made it three 20 minutes after the restart, before Wilson added some gloss with a trademark long range strike.
The impressive victory would have been in vain had Turkey also won, but Montenegro’s victory meant that Wales finished top of the group, winning promotion to the Nations League top flight.
In the CONCACAF Nations League, Raul Jimenez played a key role in helping Mexico overturn their 2-0 Quarter-Final deficit against Honduras with a convincing 4-0 second leg win in Toluca.
Raul got the comeback off and running towards the end of what had looked to be a frustrating half for the Mexicans, ghosting in at the far post to finish first time from Jesus Orozco’s cross.
After almost restoring aggregate parity in ridiculous fashion with a stunning overhead kick, Raul created Mexico’s second goal of the night when Henry Martin got on the end of the striker’s flick-on at a corner.
Jorge Sanchez then rifled home the decisive goal with five to play, with Raul substituted soon after, and Martin ensured progression to the Nations League Finals with a stoppage time penalty.
Elsewhere, Josh King played 73 minutes of England Under-19s’ goalless draw with Belgium, and Andreas Pereira was an unused substitute as Brazil drew 1-1 with Uruguay.
