STEVE BRUCE expects Andrew Cole to solve Birmingham's goal drought and shoot City back into the Premiership.

Brum boss Bruce yesterday snapped up his ex-Manchester United team-mate Cole, 35, on loan until the end of the season from Portsmouth.

And Bruce, whose side lie second in the Championship, reckons Cole can end the Blues' worrying run of just five goals in six games.

He said: "Andy is an exceptional player with a phenomenal scoring record, and we hope that his extra quality up front will help us to secure the promotion that we're so desperate for.

"Despite his age, Andy has always looked after himself which is why he is still playing at the highest level.

"We feel his experience will prove to be very beneficial to the team - particularly as we have so many young players."

Cole has hit three goals for Pompey in the league this season, despite starting just five Premiership matches.
