Fulham's French prospect Fabrice Fernandes looks set to leave the Division One promotion certainties at the end of the season.

The diminutive midfielder, who performed magnificently against Liverpool and Manchester United in high-profile cup ties, is currently on loan from French side Rennes.

It is being claimed that wealthy Fulham owner Mohammed Al Fayed is baulking at paying the £4.4 million asking price, which has been slapped on the 21-year-old`s head.

Fernandes is clearly happy that he has proved his ability, after a knee injury curtailed the early promise he had shown during the 1998/99 season in France.

"Like everyone, I needed time to adapt," he told France Football. "But I was made to feel perfectly welcome and everything went off smoothly. "My family, my friends and my girlfriend come here very often, so I am almost never alone. "Here, I have learnt a lot on both human and sporting levels."

The youngster was predictably full of praise for his coach, and fellow Frenchman, Jean Tigana.

"Everyone knows his qualities," he added. "He is someone who is very professional.
"He taught me a lot, notably in my defensive work, explaining to me that it is the basis for football."
