CARDIFF City are set to sign towering Fulham striker Eddie Johnson next week.

The US international forward is with his national team at present and all the paperwork has been sent to their association as a working permit is the only stumbling block.

The striker, 23, is expected to sign a year’s loan deal, but with a clause that would allow his return to the London-based club in January.

The Echo understands Johnson and Fulham have agreed the deal, which should be pushed through in the coming days.

Johnson moved to Fulham from Kansas City Wizards in the US this year after signing a three-and-a-half year deal thought to be worth $3m, about £1.6m.

Johnson had joined the Wizards for the 2006 season and scored on his debut.

He received his first cap and scored his first goal for the senior US national team against El Salvador on October 9, 2004, becoming one of an elite group of American players to get his first international goal in a World Cup Qualifier.

He then scored a hat-trick in his second appearance, all in a 17-minute span against Panama, just four days later. Johnson scored a total of seven goals in his first six World Cup Qualifiers.

On his transfer to Fulham earlier this year, coach Roy Hodgson said the 6ft 1in player would “add another dimension to our attacking play”.
