The bitter pill of Damien Duff's relegation from top flight football will be softened with new accounts showing that his UK firm is sitting on a cash pile of ?1.099m.

Duff's current club Fulham were relegated to the Championship after spending 13 years in the Premier League.

However, new accounts show that the 35-year-old has built up a handsome cash pile during his professional football career in England.

The Dubliner retired from international duty in 2012 but remains one of Ireland's most popular sportsmen.

In contrast to the jump in profits by his firm last year, Duff's career has stalled after his 2013 season was hit by injury, allowing him to make only 18 appearances.

The former Irish international winger has already intimated that he will be leaving Fulham this summer to ply his trade elsewhere.

In an interview last month, Duff hinted that he may play in the US's MLS before returning to Ireland to play out the final days of his football career.

Duff competed for Ireland in the 2002 World Cup and the Euro 2012 where he made his final appearance for his country against Italy when he captained the side.

According to accounts lodged by Duff's Lightzest UK Ltd, the firm had a cash pile of £1.099 million at the end of July 31st 2013.

The new filings by Duff's firm to the Companies House in the UK show that the Fulham player's firm's accumulated profits increased marginally from £1.053 million to £1.099 million last year.

The figures show that the firm's cash pile increased from ?1.097 million to ?1.099 million.
