Championship MatchDay 20 Wrap-up

Championship MatchDay 20 ended with Fulham still perched at the top of the table despite having to settle for a draw at Preston due to a referee error. Fortunately Bournemouth threw away a 2-0 lead so they remain a point below Fulham in second place. The biggist change in the table was QPR who jumped up three places into third place after winning 2-0 away at Derby. A top of the table clash between Fulham and Bournemouth takes place this Friday at Craven Cottage.

Preston North End 1 - 1 Fulham
Fulham were held 1-1 at Preston after Ched Evans bundled in a controversial equaliser. Tim Ream had put Fulham ahead in the first half with his first goal in almost four years, but they were unable to kill the game off, and were made to pay. After being held to a second successive draw, Fulham could have been toppled from the head of the Championship, but 10-man Bournemouth surrendered a 2-0 lead to draw at home to Coventry City. Fulham host the Cherries in next Friday's top-of-the-table encounter

Fulham’s manager, Marco Silva, attacked what he called “a big mistake from the referee and the linesman … There was an elbow in there and a clear handball before the ball goes over the line. It’s difficult for us to accept. We had a similar situation against Coventry recently. We’ve ended up losing two points, and it’s not been our fault, again.”

AFC Bournemouth 2 - 2 Coventry City
Bournemouth missed the chance to go top of the Championship as Todd Kane’s dramatic stoppage-time equaliser for Coventry held them to a 2-2 home draw.

Scott Parker’s side cruised into a comfortable two-goal lead through Jaidon Anthony in the 45th minute and Philip Billing in the 66th – but a 68th-minute red card for Jefferson Lerma following a last-man tackle on Matt Godden changed the picture. Godden pulled a goal back with five minutes of normal time remaining before Kane struck in the fifth minute of added time. It left the Cherries in second place, a point behind leaders Fulham,

Derby County 1 - 2 Queens Park Rangers
A stunning 90th-minute finish from substitute Andre Gray propelled Queens Park Rangers up to third in the Championship with victory over a spirited Derby County. With his back to goal, Gray turned and smashed home the winner with Rams goalkeeper Kelle Roos rooted to the spot. On a night of brilliant goals, Tom Lawrence lashed Derby in front on 10 minutes before Chris Willock's volley brought the R's level five minutes into the second half.

The victory - R's boss Mark Warburton's 50th in charge - lifts them up to third, seven points behind second-placed Bournemouth. Wayne Rooney's Rams stay bottom - after the end of their mini-revival of three matches unbeaten - with one point, 19 from safety.

West Bromwich Albion 0 - 0 Nottingham Forest
Championship promotion hopefuls West Bromwich Albion had to settle for a point as they were held to a goalless draw by Steve Cooper's improving Nottingham Forest. After having Republic of Ireland midfielder Jayson Molumby sent off for two bookable offences in the 70th minute, Albion did well to see out the game as Forest chased a winner against 10 men. Forest, who have now lost just once in 13 games, had to be the more content of the two teams after a fifth draw in six. But forth placed Albion, who had a chance to win it in stoppage time when substitute Jordan Hugill blazed over, were booed off by some fans after a second successive goalless draw.

Stoke City 0 - 1 Blackburn Rovers
Tony Mowbray hailed Blackburn’s reaction to their 7-0 thrashing by Fulham earlier this month after their 1-0 win over Stoke at the bet365 Stadium moved Rovers up to fourth place. Reda Khadra scored the winner with an excellent finish drilled into the bottom left corner past a diving Adam Davies. The defeat meant Stoke slipped out of the play-off spots.

Peterborough United 0 - 0 Barnsley
Peterborough United and Barnsley had to settle for a point each, after a cagey 0-0 draw that was subject to a delay after the floodlights failed inside the Weston Homes Stadium. With both sides confined to the relegation zone and struggling for wins, it was unsurprising the match was bereft of quality in front of goal. Teenager Kai Corbett, making his first start for Peterborough since signing from West Ham, saw a first-half attempt go begging, while Barnsley keeper Brad Collins used his feet to deny Jonson Clarke-Harris after the break. The result keeps both teams in the bottom three with just six wins between them this season.

Huddersfield Town 1 - 2 Middlesbrough
Middlesbrough celebrated a first win under Chris Wilder as Duncan Watmore’s first-half double earned a 2-1 win at Huddersfield, who could only reply in stoppage time through a Luke Daniels own goal. Wilder had taken just one point from six after replacing Neil Warnock, but his team were comfortably in control, and a late Terriers consolation did not reflect their dominance.

Swansea City 2 - 3 Reading
Reading went four points clear of the relegation zone following a 3-2 win at Swansea. After responding to Jamie Paterson’s opener to take the lead through Tom Dele-Bashiru and Andy Carroll’s first Reading goal, the Royals claimed all three points thanks to Danny Drinkwater’s 50th-minute strike, just one minute after Ryan Manning’s equaliser.

Hull City 2 - 1 Millwall
Resurgent Hull City claimed their fourth straight victory as Ryan Longman's winner handed Millwall a first defeat in five matches. The hosts went ahead after a lively start when Jacob Greaves whipped a cross towards the six-yard box where George Honeyman headed in on his 100th Tigers appearance. The Lions were level on the stroke of half-time when Benik Afobe's through-ball sent Tom Bradshaw racing away to bend a shot around Hull goalkeeper Nathan Baxter. Brighton loanee Longman then pounced to give Hull a sixth win of the season, following up after goalkeeper Bart Bialkowski parried a Josh Magennis shot.

Birmingham City 1 - 0 Blackpool
Birmingham City substitute Lukas Jutkiewicz scored the only goal of the game just six minutes after coming on to edge past Blackpool at St Andrew's. Jutkiewicz's close-range 81st-minute winner, his first goal in three months, ended a winless three-game run for Lee Bowyer's side. The Seasiders bossed possession for long spells but it was not until the 64th minute that Birmingham striker Troy Deeney finally had the game's first shot on target. City, who gave teenage midfielder Jordan James his first start in the absence of suspended duo Gary Gardner and Ryan Woods, move up to 13th in the table, while Blackpool remain 11th - a point better off.

Luton Town 1 - 2 Cardiff City
Luton Town were beaten by Cardiff for a fifth league game in succession as Sean Morrison's header proved decisive for the Bluebirds at Kenilworth Road. Cardiff led at the break thanks to Rubin Colwill's header, their first goal in the first half this season. The Bluebirds missed chances to extend their lead and Luton punished them when Jordan Clarke levelled on 64 minutes.

But Morrison earned Cardiff the win as he headed home from Ryan Giles' cross in the 77th minute. The victory for Steve Morison's side gives Cardiff a five-point cushion above the relegation zone as they remain in 20th position in the Championship, while Luton fall to 14th.

Sheffield United 2 - 0 Bristol City
Goals from Rhian Brewster and Billy Sharp gave Paul Heckingbottom a winning start as Sheffield United manager as the Blades beat Bristol City 2-0 on a snowy afternoon at Bramall Lane. Heckingbottom, who had a spell as caretaker manager last season following Chris Wilder's departure, was introduced to the crowd before kick-off after replacing Slavisa Jokanovic.
