Championship MatchDay 16 Wrap-up

Blackburn Rovers 0 - 7 Fulham
Fulham narrowed the gap to Championship leaders Bournemouth to two points with an emphatic 7-0 victory against 10-man Blackburn. The Cottagers were already two goals ahead through strikes from Neeskens Kebano and Aleksandar Mitrovic when Jan Paul van Hecke was sent off on the half-hour mark. The Dutch defender was shown a straight red card for serious foul play after bringing down Harry Wilson.

Rovers survived any further damage until half-time but Wilson scored a quick double early in the second half as Fulham closed in on a fifth successive league win. Late goals from Kebano and substitute Rodrigo Muniz, who netted twice from the bench, rounded off a magnificent night for Marco Silva’s side at Ewood Park.

AFC Bournemouth 1 - 2 Preston North End
Top-of-the-table Bournemouth lost for the first time in the league this season as they suffered a surprise home defeat to Preston. Ben Whiteman put the visitors ahead at the start of the second half but Philip Billing equalised on the hour mark. The expectation was that the Cherries would go on and win but Alistair McCann struck 12 minutes from time to give the Lilywhites a first away league win of the campaign.

West Bromwich Albion 1 - 0 Hull City
Third-placed West Brom also edged a little closer to Scott Parker’s team after Karlan Grant's eighth goal of the season helped West Brom return to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over struggling Hull at The Hawthorns. Grant swept home in the 69th minute for the only goal to reward a dominant performance from Valerien Ismael's side as Hull suffered a seventh game without an away goal.

Coventry City 1 - 2 Swansea City
Coventry missed the chance to move into the top three and stayed forth after going down 2-1 at home against Swansea. The away side were two up inside 12 minutes through Jamie Paterson and Joel Piroe and, although Kyle McFadzean pulled one back in the 28th minute, they could not find an equaliser and lost their first home game this season.

Cardiff City 0 - 1 Queens Park Rangers
QPR are up to fifth in the table after Andre Gray’s first-half goal saw them win 1-0 at struggling Cardiff. The result brought Cardiff back to earth after the point they earned at Stoke and left the Bluebirds hovering just above the Championship's drop zone.

Results Table Fixtures
Blackpool 0 - 1 Stoke City
Steven Fletcher’s 79th-minute strike sealed a 1-0 win for Stoke at Blackpool and the three points move Stoke into the play-off places. Blackpool's run of three straight wins was halted and the club could be in trouble with the Football Association after at least one missile was thrown on to the pitch in the dying minutes.

Peterborough United 1 - 1 Huddersfield Town
Fifth-placed Huddersfield looked like they would take the points when Danny Ward put them in front late on at Peterborough but Jonson Clarke-Harris marked his return from suspension with the equaliser. It was Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson 500th game as a manager.

Luton Town 3 - 1 Middlesbrough
Neil Warnock’s historic night turned sour as his Middlesbrough side were beaten 3-1 by Luton at Kenilworth Road. Warnock took charge of his 1,602nd game, an English football record, and Josh Coburn’s 15th-minute goal put Boro ahead. But Luton turned the game on its head in the second half with three goals in five minutes from Sonny Bradley, Elijah Adebayo and Harry Cornick.

Millwall 1 - 0 Reading
Benik Afobe’s 71st-minute effort gave Millwall a 1-0 victory against Reading to lift them into the top eight and made it five wins from their last seven games in the Championship. This, however, was a fourth straight defeat for the injury-ravaged Royals and they failed to register a shot on target during an insipid display in south London.

Birmingham City 3 - 0 Bristol City
Birmingham were 3-0 winners against Bristol City, with Riley McGree scoring the opener on his birthday. Scott Hogan and Gary Gardner made sure of the points in the second half at St Andrew’s and made it three wins in a row for Blues for the first time since February 2020.

Nottingham Forest 1 - 1 Sheffield United
Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United played out a 1-1 draw. Morgan Gibbs-White struck 12 minutes from time for the Blades but Lewis Grabban levelled matters five minutes later. It was a closely-contested game between two sides who began - and ended - the evening with identical records in the Championship. Slavisa Jokanovic will have been equally frustrated at not seeing his United team hold out for three points.

Barnsley 2 - 1 Derby County
The big game at the bottom of the table saw Barnsley come from behind to win 2-1 against Derby at Oakwell. Sam Baldock opened the scoring for the visitors but Victor Adeboyejo levelled things up before the break. Aaron Iseka scored the winning goal soon after the restart for managerless Barnsley. The result saw Barnsley climb to 22nd while Derby remained at the foot of the table.
