Fulham Football Club has today announced the signing of American International Carlos Bocanegra on a three year deal that will see the player at the Club until the summer of 2007. Bocanegra, a left sided central defender, joins the Club on a free transfer from MLS club Chicago Fire where he was out of contract.

The 24 year-old Californian graduated from the University of California in Los Angeles in summer 2000 and immediately signed for the Chicago side where, during his inaugural season, he was named the MLS Rookie of the Year.

In both 2002 and 2003 seasons, he was named in the MLS Best XI Squad along with the consecutive title of MLS Defender of the Year.

Carlos has become one of the core members of the US National Team having played regularly since 2002 and was nominated for the Player of the Year award for 2003, losing out to the more customary striker nominations which consisted of Landon Donovan and Brian McBride.

Manager Chris Coleman commented:

'I have seen Carlos play and I could see that he has great potential. He reads the game well and is very skilful and strong which are the prime attributes of a defender. He has a great track record at International level, so I have no doubt that he will acclimatise to the Premiership fairly quickly. I am looking forward to him joining us.'
