SUPPORT is growing for Fulham and Northern Ireland's David Healy to be included in the Queen's
Birthday Honours this month.
The Fulham star, who is the record goalscorer for his country and more recently
set a new record of 13 goals scored during a European qualifying campaign, was not included in the New Year's Honours.
The News Letter revealed in December the striker's nomination had come too late
for the June 2007 closing date for the winter round of honours.
Ahead of the latest announcement on June 14 this year, calls have been made from
across Ulster society indicating support for a belated gong for the record goalscorer.
Killyleagh councillor William Walker, who has been among the strongest advocates
for an award - believes the forward is a "great ambassador" for the Province.
"David has brought all sections of our community together through sport and by his
actions on the pitch has revived Northern Ireland football," he said.
"What a lot of people don't realise is the enormous amount of work he is involved
in for various charities. Only recently he was back home highlighting the problems
of child obesity.
"No one deserves such an award more than David Healy. The time is now right."
Former international goalkeeper, Harry Gregg and Northern Ireland supporters' spokesman,
Gary McAllister have also called on Healy's achievements to be formally recognised.
