Fulham striker Luis Boa Morte has been charged with improper conduct by the Football Association.
According to a statement on the FA’s website this "relates to an incident involving the player and supporters" during a game against Everton on 10 January.
Fulham won the Premiership game 2-1 at Craven Cottage.
Everton supporters were reported to the FA for throwing a lighter and programmes at Boa Morte during the match but a police spokesman said the player could have incited the fans' reaction by allegedly making obscene gestures towards them.
It is understood the police considered charging Boa Morte, but will leave the matter with the FA.
Fulham did not expect Boa Morte to be charged and are likely to defend him.
