Former Fulham striker Barry Hayles has revealed that he wants to sign permanently for Cheltenham Town in January.

The vastly-experienced striker has agreed to extend his loan spell from Leicester City to a second month and travelled to Hartlepool United for tonight's League One clash.

Despite turning down the offer of a six-month loan for personal reasons, Hayles insists he is keen to stay with the Robins for the maximum loan spell of 93 days.

The 36-year-old would then like to make it a full-time switch during the next transfer window. "I am definitely looking to stay here for the maximum loan period," Hayles said.

"It was due to personal reasons at Leicester that meant I couldn't make it a six-month loan before the window shut, but I want to do three months and I might be back here permanently in January.

"That is something I am looking at definitely."

Former Fulham star Hayles has so far made three appearances for the Robins and admits he is still battling back to full sharpness after a lack of first-team opportunities at Leicester.

He made his debut in Cheltenham's only League One victory this season, the 2-0 home success over Swindon Town.

Hayles set up the opening goal for Ben Gill and started the Oldham Athletic match a week later.

He was then forced to sit out the Stoke City Carling Cup tie as Leicester did not want him cup-tied and he also missed the match against his parent club, who won 4-0 at Whaddon Road.

There were signs of a potentially exciting partnership with Lloyd Owusu during last week's 2-1 defeat by Huddersfield Town, but Hayles says there is more to come.

"I ran out of steam in the second half against Huddersfield after missing two games, but we have been working hard this week so hopefully I can last 90 minutes tonight," he said.

"I am nearly there now, but a lot of us need games and it will be looking good for us when everyone is fully fit."
