Fulham striker Barry Hayles declared his
determination to keep Steve Marlet out of the first team after hitting
the equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Chelsea.
Hayles had lost his place for the previous three league matches
after Marlet arrived for £11.5million and Luis Boa Morte returned
from suspension.
However, boss Jean Tigana decided to select a largely British line-up
against Chelsea, with Hayles up front alongside Frenchman Louis Saha.
Although Chelsea dominated the first-half, with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink
putting them ahead, Fulham mounted a spirited comeback and Hayles equalised
11 minutes after the break with his second goal of the season.
The chances are that Tigana will look to regularly partner Marlet and
Saha up front in the weeks to come, with Boa Morte also a strong contender
in either a central or wide role.
However, Hayles, who was signed from Bristol Rovers for £2million
three years ago after previously playing for non-league Stevenage Borough,
believes he will still get chances to impress.
"I missed the last two games after the manager left me out but he
put me back in and I scored," he said.
"The gaffer has brought in these signings and they've come in and
adjusted quite well. But I've had a chance now and luckily enough things
have gone quite well.
"I just have to take my chances when I get them as the gaffer is
likely to change it around.
"I played the first three league games but missed the next three,
which I was upset about but I have to live with. He's stuck me back in
and I think I've justified being involved."
