The Fulham defender and Northern Ireland captain Aaron Hughes has been denied the chance to make a farewell appearance after a groin injury forced him out of the Euro 2012 qualifiers against Estonia and Italy.

The defender recently announced his decision to quit international football.

The 31-year-old had hoped to lead the side out for the final time at Windsor Park against Estonia on Friday, and to play against Italy four days later. He has won 79 caps.

The Fulham defender hopes to prolong his top-flight career and last week he decided not to make himself available for an arduous World Cup 2014 qualification schedule that includes trips to Russia, Azerbaijan and Israel.

He enjoyed a distinguished international career after making his debut against Slovakia in 1998; he scored his only goal against the Faroe Islands in August.
