Weekend Division One Fixtures, Scores and Comment

last updated Tuesday 14th November 2000, 5:15 PM

Fulham Football Club are the top club in the Nationwide league.

The Mighty Whites survived a cynical and savage attempt by Portsmouth to kick Fulham off the park.

Despite the justified sending off of two Pompey players the Referee should be taken off the list immediately. He was far too lenient on Portsmouth in the first half while booking Fulham players like Fabrice Fernandes for mild stuff. What ever the reason Refs are certainly letting our opponents off lightly.

Bazza Hayles scored two good goals with Clarkie sending in a thunder bolt. Nicolas Sahnoun debuted for the last 10 or 15 minutes and showed a number of nice touches.

Say ... We are top of Division One after a third of the campaign, have lost only one game, have the best goal difference in British football and have the leading scorer in the Premier and Nationwide leagues.

Birmingham (5) v Burnley (4)

Richard Edghill is set to go straight into the Birmingham side at right-back after joining the Blues on loan from Manchester City. Midfielder Martin O'Connor may return after recovering from concussion. This game is supposed to be David Holdsworth's last before he begins a three-match suspension, but tonsillitis may force the defender out anyway. On-loan striker Mark Burchill and fellow forward Andrew Johnson are both hoping to be fit enough to make Trevor Francis' squad.

Burnley manager Stan Ternent is hoping to have winger Glen Little back to start after he came on as a substitute last week following a month out with a hamstring injury. Former England striker Ian Wright is training with the Clarets again but insists he will not be tempted back after his retirement last season.

Australian John Filan and American Brad Friedel are vying for the goalkeeper's jersey.

Wolves' patched-up squad will probably contain fit-again striker George Ndah. But 15 players currently have injuries, and midfielder Simon Osborn is suspended. Frenchman Ludovic Pollet may be fit after being taken off with a head injury last week. But Joleon Lescott (ankle) and Lee Naylor (hamstring) are the latest additions to Molineux's injury list.

Stockport already have a lengthy injury list and have not been helped by news that goalkeeper Andy Dibble is doubtful with flu. Midfielder Jarko Wiss is definitely out because of a gash to his shin, but Frenchman Karim Fradin may be fit from his calf injury to fill the gap in the middle.

Wimbledon are likely to recall Neil Ardley and Jason Euell to the starting line-up, after both came on at half-time in last week's defeat against Fulham. Trond Andersen is doubtful, so on-loan Chelsea star Jon Harley could be move into defence.
