Fulham defenderMoritz Volz says he never felt like he was a proper part of the Arsenal set-up and grew tired of life on the sidelines.

The German defender was on the Highbury club's books for four-and-a-half years after joining them as a highly rated 17-year-old, but only made two first-team appearances.

He cut his losses when he joined Fulham in January after a five-month loan spell with Chris Coleman's side after failing to impress Arsene Wenger.

Volz said: "I didn't feel part of that top Premiership side. I never really counted myself into the success of Arsenal. I am somebody who doesn't live on the laurels of other people.

"I went to the Cup Final last season and watched from the stands. I didn't feel like I wanted a medal. Then I joined Fulham as a loan player and was looking to go back to Arsenal.

"I was still under contract and hoping I would impress them and get a chance when I went back, but that didn't happen.

"I was told I would still need to wait my turn so I had to make my mind up. I chose to play regular Premiership football instead of a few games a season."

Volz, 21, has become an important part of Coleman's side this season and has improved quickly with top-flight experience.

Volz said he is enjoying himself and added: "When I came to Fulham no one expected too much from me and I could play freely. I am pleased I'm here, playing regularly and have got a chance to prove that I am good enough."
