Moritz Volz says he is revelling in his new midfield role at Fulham this season, after scoring his first Premiership goal at the weekend.

The 23-year-old German hit the Cottagers' equaliser in their 1-1 draw with Aston Villa at Villa Park.

The result saw Chris Coleman's team move up to eighth in the table, and after last season's close brush with relegation it has been a dramatic turnaround.

For Volz in particular, a player playing at right back last term, the transformation has been even more marked, though Volz himself has tried to play down the difference when asked about his first English goal.

"It was amazing and totally unexpected as everybody could see! The best thing was that it earned us a point," Volz told the club's website.

"We've had a bit more luck this season and the Newcastle game springs to mind.

"We've got a good base to build on now and hopefully we can produce an away record like we did in my first season at Fulham when we finished ninth.

"I enjoy playing midfield as I can get up and down the pitch. I get into more advanced positions and into scoring opportunities like I did on Saturday.

"I think some players can cope with the move from defence to midfield. A lot of defenders have played midfield during their youth team days so they know what it's about.

"I played in midfield until I was about 18 so it wasn't something entirely new to me but I've never played there in my professional career."

Volz is expected to continue his role as a defensive midfielder in the match at home to Wigan Athletic on Saturday.
