Michael Timlin |
Republic of Ireland under-21 manager Don Givens has given debuts to Fulham’s Michael Timlin and Mark Quigley of Millwall in his starting line-up for this evening’s clash with Portugal in Rio Maior. Kick-off: 5pm.
Givens had lost four members of his original squad selection, and both Timlin and Quigley were late call-ups over the weekend.
Timlin, 19, is more renowned as a midfielder at Craven Cottage but will be asked to fill in at left back today – the withdrawals of defenders Marcus Painter and Patrick Kohlmann, of Birmingham City and Borussia Dortmund respectively, had left Givens short on numbers at the back.
Quigley, whose single first-team appearance for Millwall came in late 2003, will start in attack alongside Mark Yeates, who has Premiership experience for Spurs.
Republic of Ireland under-21 side (friendly v Portugal, 8/2/05):
Henderson (Notts County) – Foley (Luton Town), Kelly (Tottenham Hotspur), Fitzgerald (Bury), Timlin (Fulham) – Whelan (Sheffield Wednesday), Potter (Liverpool), Thornton (Sunderland) – Flood (Manchester City), Quigley (Millwall), Yeates (Tottenham Hotspur).
