NEW loan signing Fredrik Stoor has arrived at Derby County with a double mission.
The 25-year-old Fulham right-back aims to make a big impression with the Rams and see if it leads to an extended stay.
He also wants to win back his place in Sweden's national squad.
Sweden can still qualify for next summer's World Cup finals in South Africa and Stoor knows he must start playing matches if he is to earn a recall.
He has joined Derby initially for a month and was an unused substitute in Saturday's 1-0 home victory over Bristol City.
His stay at Pride Park has another five games to run, up to and including the home clash with Queens Park Rangers on October 24.
Stoor has made six starts in cup competitions for Fulham since signing from Norwegian club Rosenborg in July 2008 but has played only twice in the Premier League as a substitute. He has spent the rest of the time on the bench and in the reserves.
There was talk of him leaving Fulham in the recent transfer window.
"I basically told Fulham at the end of last season that maybe I will be looking to go somewhere where I can play," said Stoor.
"It didn't happen in the summer for different reasons and a loan was my next move because I have not been able to get into the team at Fulham.
"I want to play football. The past year has been one of playing cup games and sitting on the bench, so, hopefully, here I will get a chance to play some games.
"We will see how it goes first month.
"If things are working out and the club want me here and I want to be here, then I'd definitely like to make it a longer loan until January and then see what happens from there."
Stoor has won 10 caps for Sweden and played in all three of their group games in the Euro 2008 finals.
He started against Spain and Russia and came on as a substitute in the victory over Greece.
But his last appearance for the national team was in a friendly in Holland late last year.
The coaches of the national team have told him he needs play games.
"I have been speaking to the coaches and they told me if I was playing at Fulham, I would be in the Swedish squad because I have the qualities to be there," he said.
"Since Euro 2008, it has been difficult but there has not been much I could do about it.
"I have been working hard in training and trying to play well in the reserves but, last season, Fulham had a great season and that is partly why I was on the bench.
"Sweden have a couple of very tough qualifying games left, very important ones. My chances of being in a World Cup squad all depends on me playing and performing.
"I am pretty sure if I stayed at Fulham and did not play, I would not be in the squad."
Stoor had a hectic few days leading up to Saturday's game.
He played 120 minutes in Wednesday's Carling Cup tie against Manchester City and trained with Fulham as usual on Friday morning.
"My agent called me about 7pm on Friday evening and told me about the move to Derby. It all happened very suddenly," said Stoor.
"I checked into the hotel up here at about 1am Saturday morning and met the players in the dressing room before the game."
He watched Gary Teale hit a late winner to sink Bristol City.
"My first impressions have been very good," he said.
"Derby are definitely a team that want to play football, which is very positive.
"There seems to be a relaxed atmosphere in the dressing room and it is a great stadium and big crowd."
Rams manager Nigel Clough has been searching for natural cover and competition at right-back for Paul Connolly.
Stoor started his career with Swedish club Hammarby and made 51 appearances before he moved to Rosenborg in the summer of 2007.
He was part of the Rosenborg squad that went close to progressing through to the Champions League knock-out stages in 2007-8, beating Valencia twice and drawing with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Fulham beat off reported interest from Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City and a host of German and French clubs for his signature.
Clough said: "This is a terrific capture for us and I'd like to thank Roy Hodgson (the Fulham manager) and everyone at Fulham for allowing us to take him on loan.
"He is a defender of international quality, who will certainly improve our squad.
"We watched him last season and again on Wednesday night against Manchester City.
"He is a full-back or can play anywhere on the right-hand side."
