Lyon have agreed a fee of £13 million
with Fulham for forward Steve Marlet, who will undergo a medical in London
on Tuesday before signing a four-year contract reportedly worth £50,000
a week.
Marlet left the France squad due to play Chile to complete his protracted
transfer to the West London club. Marlet, who is expected to join up with
his international team-mates in Santiago on Wednesday, spent Monday in talks
with former Lyon boss Jean Tigana in France.
Lyon coach Jacques Santini was desperate to keep the France striker, but
the French club could not refuse Fulham's increased offer of £13 million
– ensuring the club a £9.2 million profit in one year on the
player they bought for £3.8 million from Auxerre.
And Marlet's team-mates have now given up hope of keeping the striker for
their Champions' League campaign.
Goalkeeper Gregory Coupet, a last-minute replacement for the injured Fabien
Barthez on the trip to Chile for Saturday's international friendly, said:
"It's a great disappointment because we're losing a super player and
a friend. Now we're going to have to lower our goals for the season.''
