     Fulham's
Steve Finnan has been given a starting place in the Republic of Ireland
squad to face Cyprus in Dublin on Saturday by boss Mick McCarthy.

Finnan has been capped nine times for the Republic and scored his only goal
so far during the 3-1 victory over Finland in November last year. He also
made the run and cross from which Jason McAteer scored the shock winner
      against Holland last month. |

Whatever the result against Cyprus, the Irish are already assured of at
least second place in the group but they would have to score at least nine
goals to finish top and gain automatic entry to the finals if Portugal gain
an expected win against Estonia in Lisbon on Saturday night.

      Republic of Ireland squad:
Given (Newcastle), Kiely (Charlton), Kelly (Blackburn); Harte (Leeds), Cunningham
